Australia immigration opportunity for semi-skilled workers

The federal government of Australia has signed agreements with Great Southern Coast of Victoria and Northern Territory for facilitating migration of semi-skilled workers with limited English proficiency to these regions. The agreements, called the Designated Area Migration Agreements, aim to help semi-skilled workers with a lower level of skills, income and language proficiency to migrate to Australia. Australia government expects to effectively address the labour shortage problem in these regions with the new agreements.

Australia immigration points system: Important changes

Australia has introduced a few important changes to the points system for General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa categories–Subclass 189 Visa, Subclass 190 visa and Subclass 491 visa. As per the changes, the maximum points for the following eligibility factors are:

  • A skilled spouse/de factor partner: 10 points
  • State/territory nomination or sponsorship by family members in Australia: 15 points
  • STEM qualifications ( Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) : 10 points
  • Being a single applicant (No spouse/de facto partner): 10 points
  • Spouse/de facto partner proficient in English: 5 points

New regional visas

The three new regional visa categories introduced by the Australian government are: Regional Provisional Skilled Work Subclass 491, Employer-Sponsored Regional Subclass 494 Visa, and Skilled Regional Subclass 191 Permanent Residence Visa. Australia introduced the Subclass 187 visa by replacing the Employer-Sponsored Regional Subclass 494 Visa and the subclass 489 Visa by replacing the Regional Provisional Skilled Work Subclass 491 Visa.

New Temporary Parent Visa

The new temporary parent visa introduced by Australia allows migrants to sponsor their parents to stay in Australia for up to five years. The term of the visa can be either three years or five years and can be renewed only once. Further, parents who are to be sponsored must have complete health insurance coverage and should not have any healthcare loan/dept.
