An Updated Guide On How To Become A Canadian Citizen

Canada is celebrating Citizenship Week from May 23 to May 29 this year. We thought this is the right opportunity to present an updated guide on how to become a Canadian citizen by immigration.

Poland work permit

Since the Canadian Citizenship Act came into effect on January 1, 1947, the act has been amended to reflect the multicultural values of Canadian society. Canada didn’t suspend but innovated with virtual Canadian citizenship ceremonies even during the pandemic.

Most recently, Canada made changes to provide for Canadian citizenship to foreign-born children whose Canadian parents are not biologically.

Canadian citizenship holds much significance and meaning for a lot of foreigners willing to study, work and settle in the country. For many, the promise of Canadian citizenship is a gateway to a better life.

Once you have decided to migrate to Canada, all you have to do is follow the below steps to obtain citizenship:

  • Determine your eligibility by taking the online assessment and applying for a Canada PR visa. There are 100+ federal and provincial programs to invite economic-class & family-class immigrations.
  • Fulfil the criteria for citizenship for naturalization which is 1,095 days out of the 5 years on a Canada PR visa. Once the foundation is laid, apply for the Canadian citizenship test and get a chance to attend a citizenship ceremony!

Canadian Permanent Residency vs Becoming a Canadian Citizen

There are primarily two things that an individual holding a Canada PR status cannot compete against an individual with Canadian citizenship. They cannot cast their right to vote or contest in the elections nor hold a high-level government post.

Canadian Permanent Residence Canadian Citizenship
An individual holding Canada PR is a citizen of another country but a permanent resident of Canada. Canadian citizenship allows its holders to become citizens of another country.
Any foreign individual applying to immigrate to Canada through Express Entry Programs, Provincial Nominee Programs, Atlantic Immigration Pilot, and Entrepreneur programs is eligible to get permanent residence status. A foreign individual can obtain Canadian citizenship by naturalization or by the virtue of holding Canada PR.

How can a Foreigner Become a Canadian Citizen?

For a foreigner to become a Canadian citizen, any eligible applicant would undergo a two-step process fulfilling certain human capital requirements like

  • young, working-age (25-33 years preferred)
  • education qualification (a graduation degree preferred)
  • work experience (at least one year of relevant experience in Canada or more than 3 years of work experience outside Canada preferred)
  • Language proficiency in English or French (bilingual candidates are given additional points)

Once the applicant comes good on the above factors, they are nominated to apply for Canadian permanent residency (PR) through economic-class pathways like Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Program, or other pathways through Business Immigration, spousal privilege, graduate visas, etc.

Once Canada PR is obtained, any eligible resident can plan to apply for Canadian citizenship by fulfilling the following requirements:

How to become a Canadian citizen: meet residency requirements

Aspiring residents must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) during the five years before the date you apply for citizenship. Any time spent outside of Canada does not count towards your physical presence requirements but there are some exceptions.

It is recommended to apply with more than 1,095 days of living in Canada to avoid calculation problems.

If you were in Canada as a temporary resident including students or work permit holders, you may be able to count that time toward your residency requirement as well.  However, each day that you spent in Canada as a temporary resident in the last five years counts as a half-day when you calculate your physical presence.

How to become a Canadian citizen: file your taxes

During your residence in Canada, you must have filed taxes before you can become a Canadian citizen. Even if you lived in Canada for only part of a year, you may be required to file an income tax return to pay taxes, claim refunds, and avail of various benefits and credit payments.

How to become a Canadian citizen: improve language skills

Those aged 18 to 54 must also show they can communicate in English or French by achieving a Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level of 4 or higher in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Language assessment made at the time of obtaining Canadian permanent residency can also be used to apply for Canadian citizenship.

After fulfilling the above requirements, eligible candidates must undergo a written citizenship test.

Canadian Citizenship Test Format

The candidates need to confirm their identity through the submission of personal information. Once done, the applicants have at least 21 days to complete the test at a convenient time. The system will monitor the response of candidates using a webcam throughout the duration of the test.

Eligible candidates can take the Canada Citizenship test online in any of the two official languages: English or French. Just like the offline exam pattern, the online Canada Citizenship test will have 20 choice-based questions, which need to be answered within 30 minutes.

A total of 75% marks are needed to qualify for the test, i.e., the candidates must answer at least 15 questions correctly out of the total of 20 questions. All the questions are expected out of topics like the history of Canada, Politics, Economy, Geography, Laws, rights, and responsibilities of a Canadian citizen.

Understanding Canadian immigration through Q&A styled blog may address some pertinent questions that you were looking to get answered by experts for a long. Let’s begin by answering the top 4 FAQs on Canadian Immigration.

  • Does age affect Canadian and Australian applications?

Most economic-class immigration programs offered by Canada and Australia have an age limit of 45. It concerns talented aspirants with a job offer or those who are looking to apply for a skilled job in Canada. A skilled job in Canada requires aspirants to have at least a graduate degree in any relevant & recognized field.

Canada awards maximum points to the younger population over 18 years who would typically pursue higher education before gaining work experience in related occupations. On the other hand, Australia prefers candidates who are in their prime working age (25-32 years) to qualify for permanent residency.

However, people aged 45 and above can still immigrate to Canada or Australia through several alternative options.

The Australian Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) (subclass 188) Visa is for those who wish to own and manage a business in Australia. Applicants under 55 years of age can apply under this visa stream, however, this requirement could be waived off if the applicant’s proposed business will be of excellent economic benefit to the state or territory!

Similarly, interested applicants aged under 55 years can apply through the Canada Start-Up Visa Programme which could lead to permanent residency.

Canadian Immigration Of Nurses in 2022

Occupations in Healthcare including Nursing were experiencing a personnel shortage in Canada even before the pandemic. Canada’s ageing demography was one of the major factors for the rising demand for medical professionals, especially Nursing staff in geriatric care. The COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020 is encouraging more Canadian immigration of nurses to fill job vacancies in the industry.

Seeing the rising demand for nurses as an occupation in Canada, the federal and provincial governments have added new permanent residency for foreign nurses.

Because nursing as a professional in Canada is considered a “skilled work”, Canadian immigration pathways for nurses are many yet not an exhaustive list. Let’s discuss some exclusive federal and provincial pathways for the immigration of foreign-trained nurses.

Canadian Immigration of Nurses through Provincial Pathways

Some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are dedicated specifically to nurses, others just require skilled work experience. Few PNPs also hold exclusive immigration nomination draws for nurses.

Sometimes PNPs may also draw eligible nurse profiles from the federal Express Entry pool and invite them to apply for a provincial nomination. Such nominated candidates get 600 CRS points added to their Express Entry score, effectively guaranteeing an invitation to apply for permanent residence.

Ontario, BC & Quebec Welcomes Foreign Nurses

Specific Canadian provinces like Ontario, British Columbia (BC), and Quebec are planning for long-term investments in welcoming more skilled healthcare workers.

For example, Ontario will invest $342 million over the next five years in improving the Canadian immigration of nurses. On the other hand, British Columbia provides up to $16,000 to about 1,500 internationally educated nurses to cover application fees, English language tests, and educational upgrading. Also, Quebec is investing $65 million to recruit and train nearly 1,000 nurses from francophone countries.

Here is a list of some of the PNP pathways for nurses.

  • Ontario invites nurses to apply through its Human Capital Priorities Stream.
  • British Columbia offers a Healthcare Professional category under its Skills Immigration and Express Entry pathways.
  • Saskatchewan has recently launched an International Health Worker EOI pool specifically for nurses.
  • Nova Scotia’s Labour Market Priorities Stream occasionally holds draws inviting nurses to apply for a provincial nomination.
  • New Brunswick’s Internationally Educated Nurses (IEN) program is a pathway for foreign nurses who can speak English or French.

In order for nurses to qualify under Quebec immigration programs, they can choose between the Regular Skilled Worker Program and the Quebec Experience Program. Both of these programs require the workers to have a working knowledge of the French language.

Express Entry Eligibility for Registered Nurses in Canada

Express Entry is an online database system that manages immigration applications for permanent residency. Applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canada Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skills Trade Program (FSTP) are managed here. Aspirants submit their profiles to the system and get a score based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

The registered profiles are assessed based on their skilled work experience, age, education, and official language ability, among other factors. The highest-scoring candidates get invited to apply for permanent residence in bi-weekly Express Entry draws.

Canadian immigration of nurses may take place under FSWP or CEC. In order to qualify, foreign nurses must have at least one year of work experience. The qualifying band score for language proficiency under Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is 7 in Engish or French The only difference is that FSWP candidates may have work experience outside Canada and CEC candidates must have worked in Canada.

National Occupation Classification 3012: Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses

Which Is Better: Canada vs Australia Immigration Points System for Foreign Skilled Workers?

If you are thinking to migrate abroad for better career options and improved living standards, chances are high that Canada and Australia are already on your priority list. The world’s major immigration destinations – Canada and Australia – use a merit-based points system to determine whether or not a candidate is eligible to apply for immigration. Here we are comparing Canada vs Australia  immigration points system for you to make an informed decision.

Immigration in a literal sense means obtaining a permanent residency visa in the country of choice. The points awarded in such an immigration system will take into account a variety of core human capital factors such as

  • Age,
  • Work Experience,
  • Language Proficiency,
  • Education, and
  • Spouse/Partner skill set.

The higher the number of points, the more likely you will qualify to migrate abroad to Canada or Australia!

Quick Comparison Between Canada vs Australia Immigration Points System

If you observe closely, both these countries exhibit a very different approach to allowing immigrants or granting permanent residency to eligible skilled workers.

Canada’s given immigration points system corresponds to the Federal Skilled Worker Program, which happens to be the most popular program among foreign skilled workers for permanent residency.

If you score 67 points or higher, you may qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program. If you meet the other requirements too, you can submit a profile to the Express Entry pool. Once you’re in the Express Entry pool, your profile will be evaluated and ranked based on a different system called Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

If you’re interested in Australian permanent residency, four visa subclasses evaluate your eligibility. You must score 65 points or higher to qualify under two direct pathways for Australian PR (Subclass 189, Subclass 190) or two provincial pathways (Subclass 491, Subclass 188).

Some minor details may have been overlooked here for sake of uniformity. Contact our immigration consultants now for a full update on Canada vs Australia immigration points system based on your profile.

  • Applicant Age Criterion

Canada Immigration Points System Australia Immigration Points System
Age Group Points Age Group Points
18-35 years 12 18-24 years & 33-39 years 25
36-40 years 11-7 25-32 years 30
41-46 years 6-1 40-44 years 15
47 years & above 0 45 years & above 0

In terms of age criteria, Canada awards maximum points to the younger population over 18 years who would typically pursue higher education before gaining work experience in related occupations and On the other hand Australia prefers candidates who are in their prime working age (25-32 years) to qualify for permanent residency.

  • Applicant Work Experience Criterion

Canada Immigration Points System Australia Immigration Points System
Work Experience Points Work Experience Points
1 year 09 1-3 years (outside Australia) 0
2-3 years 11 3-4 years (outside Australia) 05
4-5 years 13 5-7 years (outside Australia) 10
6+ years 15 8+ years (outside Australia) 15

Australia is biased in awarding points based on work experience.

Australia awards maximum points to eligible skilled workers who have had work experience inside Australia. For example,

  • 3-4 (experience in Australia): 10 points
  • 5-7 (experience in Australia): 15 points
  • 8+ (experience in Australia): 20 points

On the other hand, Canada remains neutral and prefers any candidates with work experience outside or inside Canada.

Australia considers eligible candidates with more than 3 years of work experience as against Canada which considers skilled workers for immigration with just over 1 year of work experience.

  • Language Proficiency Criterion

Canada Immigration Points System Australia Immigration Points System
English Proficiency Points English Proficiency Points
CLB 9 or higher 24 Competent English 0
CLB 8 20 Proficient English 10
CLB 7 15 Superior English 20

The distinguishing factor here is Canada has two official languages: English and French, whereas Australia considers English as its official language. Therefore, interested candidates have to qualify for language proficiency according to the requirements of the permanent residency program.

CLB stands for Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) and is equivalent to the standard proficiency test available for English and French. Those who show proficiency in French are given an additional 4 points along with their band score in CLB.

  • Applicant Education Criterion

Canada Immigration Points System Australia Immigration Points System
Education Points Education Points
Degree/Diploma 19 Degree/Diploma 10
Bachelor’s Degree 21 Bachelor’s Degree 15
Doctorate 25 Doctorate 20

Canada is more liberal in awarding assessment points based on the applicant’s educational qualification. This is more because Canada allows for direct immigration of eligible candidates even without study or work experience in any of the Canadian provinces or territories.

Further, Canada awards assessment points for additional categories like

  • HS or SC Diploma: 5 points
  • College Certificate: 15 points
  • BS/MBA/Master’s: 23 points

Both the countries favor retaining international students after graduation. While Canada awards Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for 3 years, Australia offers a flexible work visa for graduating students. These visa holders gain work experience inside the country and may be eligible to qualify for permanent residency after a certain period.

Final Verdict: Canada vs Australia Immigration Points System

When it comes to Skills of Partner/Spouse, Canada awards a maximum of 5 points whereas Australia awards a maximum of 10 points. However, it will be premature to conclude that Canada does not favor family immigration.

Canada is pursuing the most ambitious immigration plan in its history to welcome over 1.7 million new permanent residents in the next three years. Over 60 percent of the target is said to be economic-class immigration programs and whereas about 20 percent would be fulfilled from the family-class programs.

Earlier in April 2022, the Morrison Government called for increasing permanent skilled migration numbers. The cause to increase immigration to Australia post-pandemic is reflected well in Australia’s federal budget for 2022-23. The Australian government has fixed the 2022-23 permanent migration program ceiling at 160,000 places.

While both the countries are poised well to welcome more skilled immigrants to boost post-pandemic recovery, you have to book a free appointment with CanApprove and consult an expert before making a decision.

4 FAQs on Canadian Immigration Part 4: Understanding Canada Through Q&A

Tracing back to the modern Canadian immigration system that possibly began in 1967, the “immigration points system” has evolved considerably today. Canada has been ranked the top nation for immigration in the world multiple times by various reports and indexes. Whether it is for political stability, career prospects, or for the future of their children, Canada is a land of possibilities. This is why we have come up with FAQs on Canadian immigration for you to comprehend your chances of qualifying.

Understanding Canada Through Q&A

In Canada, immigration is the act granting permanent residency status, including to refugees. Furthermore, all Canadian permanent residency holders are eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting certain requirements. Understanding Canadian immigration through Q&A styled blog like this may invite actual questions that you were looking to get answered from experts for a long. Let’s begin by answering the top 4 frequently asked questions (FAQs) on Canadian Immigration.

Q: Are All Immigrants Eligible for Free Healthcare?

One of the biggest benefits of immigrating to Canada is free health care support. However, Canada offers free health care support only to permanent residents and citizens.

This may mean different things for various categories of temporary visa holders in Canada. For instance, study visa holders may have to pay a fee to get themselves covered under a healthcare plan. Whereas valid work permit holders may be eligible for free in some provinces like Ontario.

Each of the Canadian provinces and territories has the freedom to offer its own health plan, services, and products, or even choose the category of beneficiaries. Newly landed candidates can sign up for their province’s health insurance system and get a health card.

Q: What is the Current Job Vacancy for Immigrants in Canada?

Canada has historically been a land of immigrants. More so in the last decade, Canada became of the top 3 OECD nations to attract highly skilled talents to study, work & settle permanently.

Even though the pandemic slowed down the addition of new immigrants to the ageing local workforce, unemployment rates are now at record lows. What is even more satisfying is that Canadian immigrants enjoy low unemployment rates.

At the same time, Canada is experiencing a record high job vacancy rate with more than 800,000 unfilled jobs!

Despite the tight labor market, Canada’s GDP grew 6.7% in the fourth quarter on an annualized basis, exceeding analyst expectations of 6.5%. This goes on to show the increasing scope for skilled-based immigration to Canada.

Q: Which is a Better Pathway for Canada PR: Express Entry or PNP?

Canada has always remained the frontrunner in attracting the best global talents to study, work and settle permanently. The immigration-friendly country continued to honour its immigration levels target even during the pandemic. Canada issued over 400,000 invitations to apply for permanent residency even in 2020, majorly by transitioning temporary residents who were already in Canada on various work permits.

Since then, IRCC supported all major Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) to welcome more eligible skilled candidates to apply for Canadian immigration. This is done to ensure that Canadian provinces meet the local labour shortage demand and the economy revives faster as soon as the pandemic recedes.

Getting a provincial nomination effectively guarantees one’s candidature to qualify for Canadian permanent residence via Express Entry draws. A provincial nomination allows you to stay in that particular province for work. Canada targeted over 83,000 invitations for provincial nominations in 2022 alone.

The Express Entry system is an application database for three immigration programs namely the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Additionally, most PNPs have a dedicated Express-Entry linked stream to invited eligible candidates.

However, the outlook for Express Entry draws in 2022 seems bleak as IRCC will land just about 55,000 profiles. However, Express Entry landings are set to increase over the next two years with IRCC targeting more than 110,000 newcomers by 2024.

Canada will resume Express Entry draws to all candidates in early July. This announcement could not have come at a better time since Express Entry is the main way the federal government welcomes skilled immigrants.

Q: What Are Settlement Supports for Immigrants to Canada?

Canada offers free settlement support to immigrants, even before they arrive in the country. Immigrants can access settlement services by both Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Ministry of Immigration, Francisation, and Integration (MIFI) for Quebec-bound newcomers.

For instance, there are about 1,200 IRCC-registered service providers across Canada.  The country spends about $1.7 billion CAD on settlement services every year to support newcomers, more than anywhere else in the world.

Additionally, if you choose to apply for Canadian immigration with CanApprove, we offer a host of pre-departure and post-arrival immigration services including

  • accommodation,
  • job search options,
  • orientation on the province of stay,
  • assistance with IELTS preparation,

All That You Need to Know About Immigration Without a Job Offer to Canada

Yes, you’ve read it right. There are many programs that allow immigration without a job offer in Canada. You may be even allowed to qualify for Canadian permanent residency before you begin your job search in Canada!

Immigration in Canada means permanent settlement. There are more than 100 economic-class pathways to apply for Canadian immigration. Most programs rely on applicants’ work or study experience for qualifying.

A list of popular Canadian immigration programs that do not require applicants to have a prior job offer in Canada include:

  • Federal Express Entry
  • Alberta Express Entry
  • Saskatchewan Express Entry and Occupations In-Demand
  • Ontario Human Capital Priorities Stream
  • BC Skills Immigration International Post-Graduate
  • Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities

Canada PR Without A Job Offer via Federal Express Entry

Ever since the inception of the Express Entry system in 2015, skilled immigration for Canadian permanent residency is streamlined into three federal immigration programs. The federal Express Entry acts like an application database for these immigration programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Each of these programs has work or study experience requirements but allows immigration without a job offer in Canada. Incentivizing Canadian immigration further, FSWP candidates need not have prior work experience in Canada to qualify. As a result, any foreign skilled worker with over 3 years of full-time experience in any skilled occupation stands a good chance to obtain Canadian permanent residency!

Express Entry year-end report noted occupations in Information Technology, and Business and Financial Services continue to dominate invitees in the Canada Express Entry. The 2020 Express Entry draws also invited more Food Service Supervisors and Administrative Assistants to apply for Canada PR.

Interested candidates will have to create an online profile and enter themselves into the federal talent pool. Further, the profiles are assessed and ranked based on the Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) which factors into core human capital criteria like age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invite the highest-scoring candidates from the Express Entry pool to apply for Canadian immigration about every two weeks. It is expected to resume the Express Entry draws for FSWP and CEC candidates from July 2022.

What are Popular Provincial Streams for Canadian Immigration Without A Job Offer?

The introduction of the Express Entry system had a profound effect on the management of Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). The growing popularity of Express Entry forced PNPs to dedicate an additional provincial stream to invite eligible skilled workers to receive provincial nominations.

A provincial nomination may effectively guarantee permanent residency to eligible Express Entry profiles by adding extra 600 CRS points. For instance, the latest Express Entry draw invited 829 candidates with provincial nominations and CRS scores above 772 points to apply for Canada PR. All the invited candidates were required to score 172 points while the additional 600 points would make their CRS jump to 772.

Here are some popular provincial streams from friendly immigration destinations for your Canadian immigration without a job offer:

Alberta Express Entry

Here are some of the general eligibility criteria for the Alberta Express Entry Stream.

  • have a valid Express Entry profile in the IRCC Express Entry system;
  • have stated an interest to immigrate to Alberta;
  • work in an occupation that supports Alberta’s economic development; and
  • have a minimum CRS score of 300.
  • Saskatchewan Express Entry and Occupations In-Demand

Not all immigration streams under Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) require interested candidates to have a job offer before applying. Canadian Immigration without a job offer under SINP is possible through these two provincial nomination streams:

  • Saskatchewan Express Entry-linked stream: requires you to have an active profile in the federal Express Entry system in order to apply.
  • Saskatchewan Occupation In-Demand stream: an applicant must have at least one year of work experience in one of the positions included on Saskatchewan’s Occupations In-Demand list.

     Ontario Human Capital Priorities Stream

Nearly two-thirds of principal applicants who applied through Express Entry in 2020 named Ontario as their province of destination. Such is the popularity of Ontario among foreign skilled immigrants!

If you wish to settle in Ontario and do not have a job offer, you may submit an application under the Ontario Express Entry: Human Capital Priorities Stream. This stream allows the province to nominate eligible Express Entry candidates who meet the language, work experience, and other requirements.

About 8,000 prospective immigrants receive nominations from Ontario every year. You could be one among them. Contact our consultants to know more about your chances of immigration without a job offer in Canada.

  • BC Skills Immigration International Post-Graduate

Any international graduate student in science from an eligible institution in British Columbia can qualify for Canadian permanent residency without a job offer.

The provincial government gives more weightage to candidates with a master’s or Ph.D. degree in the following natural, applied, or health sciences programs:

  • agriculture;
  • biological and biomedical sciences;
  • computer and information sciences and support services;
  • engineering;
  • engineering technology;
  • health professions and related clinical sciences;
  • mathematics and statistics;
  • natural resources conservation and research; or
  • physical sciences.

To meet the eligibility for immigration without a job offer, you will need to submit your application to the BC PNP within three years of the date shown on your official transcript. For anything else, our consultants are just a phone call away to help!

  • Nova Scotia Labour Market Priorities

One of many pathways under Nova Scotia PNP is the Labour Market Priorities stream that allows immigration without a job offer.

Federal Pathway for Canada Immigration

Immigration in Canada means obtaining permanent residency. Aspirants choose Canada because of its direct permanent residence pathway. Any prospective candidate who seeks to obtain Canada permanent residency must register their profiles online on the Express Entry portal. All the registered profiles are then assessed and ranked based on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

Such profiles are evaluated on a total of 1200 points. The human capital criteria like

  • age,
  • education,
  • work experience outside Canada,
  • language proficiency in English/French,
  • spouse adaptability,
  • Canadian study experience, etc. are considered for evaluation purposes.

Tech workers qualify for any of the two federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Canada Express Entry. However, Canada has not invited any profiles to apply for Canadian immigration under these programs since 2021.

FSWP was the main source of foreign skilled immigrants to Canada without a job offer until recently when IRCC decided to focus on inviting only CEC & PNP candidates. CEC profiles mostly consisted of international student graduates who had gained at least one year of work experience and were eligible to apply for permanent residency.

Canada is expected to resume Express Entry draws for FSWP & CEC profiles in “early July”.

Provincial Immigration Pathways for Canadian Permanent Residency

After receiving provincial nominations from any of the below provincial streams, you can apply to the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to qualify for permanent residency. Among various Canada PR options, provincial pathways are in most demand.

Between 2021 and now, Canada Express Entry draws have relied majorly on Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP). All the recent Express Entry nominees had a successful provincial nomination and were already registered in the Express Entry pool. For instance, in the latest Express Entry draws, Canada invited 787 PNP candidates to apply with CRS scores of at least 782.

Provincial nominees with active Express Entry profiles got 600 points over and above their usual Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. This may guarantee an invitation to apply for Canada permanent residency in upcoming PNP-specific Express Entry draws.

To get an invitation in a BC Tech draw, candidates must be eligible for one of BC’s immigration programs and have a job offer of at least one year.

Route to Canada PR through RNIP: Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot

Obtaining permanent residency (PR) in any advanced economy is an aspirational dream of many middle-class families in Asia & Africa. Surprisingly as it may be, Canada is among the few OECD nations that offer a direct pathway to permanent residency. Here is one such route to Canada PR through RNIP which is a community-driven initiative for Canadian immigration.

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) was launched in 2019 and is expected to continue for the next five years. It selects eligible foreign skilled workers based on their work experience, academic profile, and language proficiency. Owing to its success, many participating communities are now demanding the federal government makes it a permanent immigration program.

What do we mean by a Community-Driven Initiative for Canadian Immigration?

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) is a community-driven initiative that allows foreign skilled workers to immigrate to Canada. The participating communities are required to attract and retain new immigrants through their dedicated economic development plans. They also provide the right infrastructural support in connecting them with local job vacancies.

The main intention behind this initiative is to encourage regional immigration for mutual gains. While the local community grows through increased economic activities, foreign skilled workers find easier Canadian PR options to settle in an OECD nation like Canada.

Using Statistics Canada’s index of remoteness, these communities are known to have a population of about 50,000 people or less and be located at least 75 km from the core of a Census Metropolitan Area.

List of 11 Participating Communities

As of now, the federal government of Canada has allowed 11 communities from provinces like Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan to promote regional immigration of foreign skilled workers.

The following 11 communities are participating in the Rural and Northern Immigration pilot:

Canadian Province Participating Community
Ontario (5) North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay
Manitoba (2) Brandon, Altona/Rhineland
Saskatchewan (1) Moose Jaw
Alberta (1) Claresholm
British Columbia (2) Vernon, West Kootenay (Trail, Castlegar, Rossland, Nelson)

Communities from other Canadian provinces like Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and Yukon will soon be added.

How to Qualify for Canada PR through RNIP?

Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) is a part of the federal skilled worker program through which eligible profiles can obtain permanent residency. In order to receive a successful nomination to apply for Canada PR through RNIP, profiles must fulfill both federal criteria and community recommendations.

The federal criteria to qualify under RNIP include

  • Work experience: At least one year of continuous work experience in the last three years

OR

  • Education: Graduated from a publicly funded post-secondary institution in the recommending community.
  • Language proficiency: Meet the language threshold for the NOC skill type/level of the job being offered.
  • Settlement Funds: Proof of financial stability to settle and support themselves and their family.

A community recommendation is based on the candidate’s:

  • intention to live in the designated community.
  • job offer and the community’s economic needs.
How to Apply?

  • Selection of communities for participating in the RNIP.
  • The community recommends the candidate, thereby making them eligible for applying to IRCC for Canada PR through RNIP.
  • The candidate submits their Canadian permanent residence application to IRCC.

IELTS for Canada Visa: How to Maximize Score in English to Boost Your Chances for Study or PR?

The academic and professional ambitions of candidates willing to settle in OECD nations can be realized through IELTS for Canada visa. In fact, it is well-documented that language proficiency in English or French act as a deal-breaker to entering Canada for professional career opportunities or study in Canada options.

Any economic-class immigrant aspirant who wishes to apply for Canada permanent residency, either through Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), must compulsorily come good in human capital factors like age, education, and work experience. While a prior job offer in Canada is not a mandatory requirement (and varies on a program basis), proof of English/French proficiency is compulsory.

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and is one of two accepted language proficiency tests in English. The other is the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP).

The major difference between IELTS and CELPIP is the English accents. CELPIP uses Canadian accents for the speaking and listening portion of the test, unlike the IELTS, which uses English-speaking accents from other countries, including Australia and New Zealand.

Let’s explore more on how to maximize score in IELTS for study in Canada or even qualify for Canada permanent residency through various economic-class pathways.

Are Language Tests Compulsory for Canadian Immigration?

Yes, your level of language proficiency in English or French is one of the few deciding factors in gaining Canada permanent residency or temporary residence visas like study permits or work permits.

IELTS is a language test designed to prove English proficiency for students who wish to pursue post-secondary study in Canada or settle in Canada under Express Entry & other immigration programs. Whereas, CELPIP is exclusively designed to assess Canada permanent residency applicants.

Apart from English as a universal test of proficiency, Canada also considers French as its official language. Canadian provinces like Quebec, and British Columbia attracts a lot of french-speaking immigrants.

If you speak French, taking the Test d’évaluation de français (TEF) or the Test de Connaissance du français (TCF) can significantly increase your chances in the Express Entry pool.

The language test results must meet the Canadian Language benchmarks (CLB) for English and Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC) for French. Newcomers who speak English and French can earn up to a maximum of 28 points. If you only speak one of Canada’s official languages, you can still earn a maximum of 24 points.

How to Maximize Score in IELTS?

First & foremost, you need to be clear about which IELTS you need, Academic or General Training, and by when you need your results. The qualifying score of IELTS for Canada visa may vary as per the receiving organizations such as Canadian universities or immigration authorities.

IELTS is conducted on both offline & online modes. The proficiency test for English has four parts: Reading, Listening, Academic Writing & Speaking. The scores in IELTS for Canada visa are considered in terms of band levels. Each candidate is expected to score above the qualifying band, depending on the visa program.

For example,

UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO

Canada Labour Market for Immigrants: Work & Canada PR Options in 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted immigration levels in Canada. But a closer look suggests that the COVID recession is different. Canada labour market for immigrants continues to have a bright future irrespective of whether they recently landed or will be landing in the near future.

Why Immigration to Canada in 2022 is Brighter than Ever?

Canada is pursuing an ambitious immigration plan of welcoming over 1 million new economic-class immigrants over the next three years. This calls for us to explore three major factors that are keeping the spirits of immigration to Canada high and Canada may achieve the annuals target.

Ageing Demography Resulting in More Retirements

Canada has about 20 million workers, of whom about 9 million are baby boomers. All 9 million of these baby boomers will reach Canada’s retirement age of 65 within the next decade. More of them are retiring which is leaving a larger gap in the labor market. This will create huge chances in Canada Labour Market for Immigrants.

Historically, Canada has been able to fully replace retirees with young Canadian graduates completing their education and entering the workforce but this is no longer the case. Canada’s low birth rate means it must rely on other sources of talent to replace its retiring workers.

This twin demographic shock is overwhelmingly fulfilled by immigration to Canada of foreign skilled workers. Canada has been able to sustain higher immigration levels in the past. Prior to the pandemic, immigrants comprised up to 100% of Canada’s annual labor force growth and this will become the norm over the next decade.

More Competitive Immigration Selection Process

Over the recent years, the Canadian federal, provincial, and territorial governments have updated their immigrant selection criteria to account more for human capital factors. This is backed by research that claims to result in stronger economic outcomes for immigrants in Canada.

For example, immigration to Canada under Express Entry prefers candidates who are young (25-35 years), well-educated, fluent in English and/or French, and with professional work experience. Other bonuses such as having Canadian education and/or work experience result in higher assessment points.

This increases the chances of obtaining permanent residence and ultimately better outcomes in the Canada labour market for immigrants.

Canadian Government Investing in Immigrant Settlement

The latest federal budget for 2022 promises some $2 billion per year to settle more than 400,000 new permanent residents annually. As a result, IRCC is increasing its investments in improving Canada labour market for immigrants through settlement services such as workforce and language training.

These services are also delivered pre-arrival to give immigrants useful information and support to help expedite the settlement process once they arrive in Canada.

Benefits of Canada Immigration

Direct PR pathway, favourable policies, and multiculturalism remain to be the marketing words for Canadian immigration. A new criterion is now added to the benefits of Canada immigration. Toronto ranked highly on equality, maternity, and wealth.

For career women like Lara Zink, gender equity is becoming an increasing imperative. “I had a 20-plus-year career in capital markets at one of Canada’s Big Five banks while raising two children as a single mom, which was both challenging and rewarding,” she says.

She remarks, “Today most women working in finance in Toronto take up to 12 months maternity leave, and many men are now taking advantage of parental leave policies, too. It goes a long way in reducing the stigma attached to maternity leave for women.”

Best Immigration Consultants in Dubai

The government treats all Canadian immigration applicants alike, whether applied through self or through a representative.

Keeping this spirit, many aspirants apply through themselves only to get rejected later due to the nature of the documentation process and other requirements. Here is where you would need timely and genuine guidance from a certified immigration consultant.

Among the best immigration consultants in Dubai, CanApprove can help you & highly recommended if you have been:
