In the past five years, the migration fraud division of Australia‘s Home Affairs Department has received a total of 2,796 visa scam-related complaints, says a report by SBS News. All these complaints were filed during the period between July 2014 and September 2019.
According to immigration experts,many more such cases go unreported because victims of visa fraud are reluctant to file complaints. Moreover, the victims whose visas have been refused or cancelled owing to fraud do not receive any sort of protection or visa security from the authorities even if they file a complaint. The victims of visa fraud would most probably be trying to secure their visa status rather than filing a complaint.
Further, their circumstances would also be preventing them from complaining to the concerned authorities. We can assume that a person vulnerable enough to trust somebody with their immigration process even without checking their credentials would not be informed enough to know how and to whom they must submit a complaint.
The Border Watch division under Australia’s Department of Home Affairs is encouraging visa fraud victims to report unlawful operators. They also assure that complaints would be acted upon. But the Department would not be providing the complainant any information regarding the progress or outcome of the investigations owing to privacy concerns.
