Canadian Minister for Immigration, Sean Fraser, along with provincial leaders made an important announcement to widen the scope of applying for Canada Visa. Starting January 1, 2022, the Atlantic Immigration Pilot (AIP) will become a permanent program. The program is now called the Atlantic Immigration Program.
AIP will open doors for 6,000 eligible candidates to apply for Canada Visa annually and settle in Atlantic Canada.
Launched in 2017, the AIP is an employer-driven immigration program. It allows foreign talents to immigrate to the four Atlantic provinces. No expensive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LIMA) to apply for Canada Visa under this program.
Every local employer undertakes LIMA before hiring foreign talents. It ascertains that the job role cannot be fulfilled by the local talent pool and eligible foreign talent can be hired to fulfil it.
The four Canadian provinces in the Atlantic region include New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Labrador.

Since the launch of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot, it has brought nearly 10,000 newcomers to the provinces. Participating employers have made over 9,800 job offers in key sectors, including health care, accommodations, food services, and manufacturing.
After one year, more than 90% of newcomers on the AIP were still living in Canada, which is much higher than other immigration programs in the region. A government report has also concluded the increasing retention rates in the Atlantic region. Within the region, Nova Scotia has an immigrant retention rate of 71%.
Applying for Canada Visa: PNP in Atlantic Canada
Applying for Canada Visa through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is another option. Through these programs, the provinces have been able to welcome a wide range of skilled workers, graduates who have studied in Canada, and business immigrants such as entrepreneurs.
Atlantic Canada PNP options are:
- Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)
- New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP)
- Newfoundland And Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP)
- Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP)
Since the launch of the federal Express Entry system in 2015, each Atlantic province has created at least one PNP stream aligned with it. It has widened the scope of applying for Canada Visa which could turn into permanent residence in a quick time.
Nonetheless, the many benefits of Canada immigration outweigh the long processing time of six months to one year to get a Canada visa.
