Canada Continues To Witness Low Unemployment And High Job Vacancies, Boosting Immigration 

The monthly payroll employment, earnings, hours, and job vacancy report for May 2022 indicates Canada still has over one million job vacancies. The report complied data. Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, British Columbia and Newfoundland and Labrador all reported increased employment in retail trade sector. Additionally, tech occupations such as computer systems design and related services under the professional, scientific, and technical services sector showed growth in every province. 

Also, for the thirteenth month in a row, accommodation and food services has had the highest number of vacancies. Both Nova Scotia and Manitoba reported 161,000 job vacancies.

However, the report by Statistics Canadare noticed a dip in payroll employees in most sectors for the first time since May 2021. While Ontario and Manitoba reported 30,000 and 2,500 job vacancies, respectively, British Columbia was the only province that saw an increase in payroll employees.

Payroll employees are full-time or part-time employees who receive remuneration, taxation and social benefits as required by the Canadian law. 

Health care sector continues to increase job vacancies 

The report found the job vacancy rate in the health care and social services sectors has risen sharply to 143,000 vacancies, or 6.1%. 

This is a significant increase over the vacancy rate in April, which was 5.4% and 20% higher than it was in May 2021.

Unemployment Rate Fell Across the Three Immigrant Cohorts 

Earlier in May 2022, Statistics Canada made a few other observations with respect to the unemployment rate among Canadian immigrants

The results are likely to boost immigration to Canada in the near future: 

  • Immigrants who gained permanent residence 10 years ago or more: The unemployment rate stood at 4.6 percent in April.
  • Immigrants who gained PR between 5 to 10 years ago: The unemployment rate fell to 5.8 percent compared to 6.3 percent in March.
  • PR immigrants within the last five years: The unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent among immigrants, compared to 8.3 percent, in April.
