Express Entry Reforms: New Measure Counts Online or Part-Time Studies Out Of Canada For CRS Points

Canada is aiming to improve the chances for international student graduates to qualify for permanent residency.

The latest Express Entry reform relaxes evaluating rules for candidates who studied online during the pandemic.

Normally, online education does not count for CRS points if more than 50% of the program was completed through distance learning.

Thanks to the latest update from IRCC, Express Entry candidates will now be eligible for Canadian educational credential points for programs completed online between March 2020 and August 2022.

The official page reads the new measure applies to those who earned a Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate online during the eligibility period – March 2020 and August 2022.

These candidates may now be eligible for CRS points even if the program was entire: completed online, from outside Canada, or through part-time studies.

  • age
  • education
  • work experience outside Canada
  • language proficiency in English/French
  • spouse adaptability
  • Canadian study experience, etc. are considered for evaluation purposes.

The registered profiles are evaluated on a total of 1200 points.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recommend Express Entry candidates update their profiles as soon as possible to get the best possible chance to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in the next Express Entry draw, scheduled on August 3.

Those invited for permanent residence have 60 days to submit their applications to IRCC. IRCC aims to process most applications within 6 months or less.

Canadian immigration is undergoing a rapid change where the country is in need of skilled immigrants- professionals, entrepreneurs/investors, students, and their families more than ever. The dual demographic burden of the aging population and low birth rate among the locals will boost immigration targets in the coming years.
