A sigh of relief for the anxious population in Canada as well as immigration candidates as Health Canada provided its first approval for a coronavirus vaccine on December 9, 2020.
Canada becomes the third country in the world to authorize a vaccine for COVID-19 after the United Kingdom and Bahrain. Approval was given to a coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech Manufacturing.
Health Canada is the department of the Government of Canada responsible for the country’s federal health policy. It has, further, placed three other vaccines for their review and the decision regarding its approval is kept pending until verification of trial data.
Canada’s Immigration System Operated Throughout The Pandemic
Although Canada was equally affected by the pandemic as the rest of the world, the country kept its immigration system functioning throughout the lockdowns.
Canada began with innovating the Express Entry draws by focusing more on program-specific invitations for Canada PR. Between the months of April, May, June, only those candidates qualifying under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) were issued invitations to apply for permanent residence. Applicants qualifying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) were considered regularly from the month of July.
Towards the end of October, Canada unveiled its historic Immigration Levels Plan for 2021-2023. Over the course of three years, Canada will seek to welcome over 400,000 immigrants annually to compensate for lower newcomer arrivals during the pandemic.
Canada has also targeted to favor more bilingual immigration candidates by awarding additional CRS points to their Express Entry or provincial EOI profile.
Canada held another major Express Entry draw, inviting 5,000 successful candidates to apply for permanent residence. With this, Canada has invited over 100,000 Express Entry candidates in a single year, a feature that was never achieved since its launch in 2015. Most Canada PNP has also achieved their annual allocation targets for issuing a provincial nomination for Canada PR, despite the successive ban on international travel.
British Columbia had recently introduced a regional Pilot to boost Entrepreneur Immigration to the province. This regional pilot has lower financial net worth eligibility and language proficiency than CLB 4. Contact our consultants to know more.
It certainly seems like Canada is looking to get its newcomer levels back on track following the pandemic. Higher immigration is a policy Canada is pursuing to support its economic growth in light of its ageing population and low birth rate.
