Statistics Canada released payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies report for August 2022 that noted 958,500 vacant payroll employment positions in Canada.

The healthcare and social assistance sectors in Canada are found to have the highest number of open positions in recent months. 

The healthcare sector posted the highest number of job openings in Canada at 152,000 positions. This is an increase of 0.4% over the June and July data for a total of 6.4%.

Payroll employment in Canada does not include self-employed, professional practices, or owners and partners of unincorporated businesses. 

Canada relies on immigration to fill the vacancies

A quarter of registered nurses and 36% of physicians in Canada are not Canadian-born. 

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is further taking measures to make it easy for foreign-trained healthcare workers to immigrate.

Statistics Canada report also noticed payroll employment gains in professional, scientific, and technical services, particularly in computer systems design and related services and management, scientific and technical consulting services industries. 

Ontario reported the most significant gains while Alberta and Quebec filled over 500 vacancies each.

New Immigration Levels Plan 2023-25

Canada did not hesitate to release an ambitious immigration levels plan yet again. 

The country looks forward to welcoming nearly 465,000 new immigrants annually in 2023. The targets for 2024 and 2025 are about 485,000 and 500,000 new immigrants respectively. 

It is even more encouraging to note that Canada is on track to achieve its annual immigration target for 2022.
