Canada Startup Visa Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

• have a qualifying business
• secure a letter of support from a designated organisation by convincing you have a business worth supporting
• meet the minimum language requirements in English or French 
• have sufficient funds to support yourself and your dependents upon arrival.

Required Documents:

• Passports/Travel Documents
  Copies for you, spouse/partner, and dependents.
  Must hold a valid regular passport, and if you reside in a country other than your nationality, include a photocopy of your valid visa for that country.
• Language Test Results
  Submit valid language test results (within 2 years) from IELTS, CELPIP, PTE Core, TEF, or TCF; to claim points for both English and French, you must provide results for each language.
• Letter of Support
  This is a document from a Canada startup visa designated organisation. The organisation supporting you needs to send a letter of support to each member of your entrepreneurial team. You need to include it when you apply for either permanent residence or an optional work permit.
• Identity & Civil Documents
  Provide identity and civil documents for you and your spouse, including birth, marriage/divorce certificates, IDs, and legal name changes. If in a common-law relationship, include IMM 5409 and proof of 12 months of cohabitation.
• Children’s Documents
  Provide children’s birth certificates/adoption certificates, and custody proof if applicable. For non-accompanying parents, submit IMM 5604 and photo ID; also include proof of dependency for children over 19 with a disability.
• Police Certificates
  A police certificate is an official record confirming whether a person has a criminal history, used to assess visa admissibility. You must obtain one from every country where you’ve lived for six months or more since age 18, and are encouraged to submit them with your application. If you cannot provide them all initially, you may still apply, but you must obtain the certificates early to avoid delays, as they are typically valid for one year and may need to be renewed during processing.

  Passport photos of each family member in Canada.

  Upload proof of payment (no cash);
• Proof of Funds
  Provide proof of readily transferable funds in convertible currency, such as a bank certification letter, savings balance, or fixed deposit statements. How to Apply for Canada Startup Visa?

1. Create an Account or Sign In

To begin your application, you must register or log in through the Permanent Residence (PR) Portal.

2. Prepare and upload the Required Supporting documents through the portal

• Valid passport or travel document
• Language proficiency test results
• Letter of support from a designated organisation
• Birth certificates
• Identity and civil status documents
• Children’s information (if applicable)
• Police certificates from countries where you have lived
• Photos of you and each accompanying family member
• Fee payment receipt
• Proof of funds to support yourself and your dependents

3. Pay the application fees online.

Visa Application Fees start from $2,385
You need to pay:

• Processing fees for yourself and your dependents.

• Right of permanent residence fee (which you need to pay when your application is approved). 
• Biometrics fee – fingerprints and photo (which should be paid at the time of application submission).

In addition to Canada government fees, you may also incur charges from third-party service providers as part of the Canada Startup Visa application process. These include:

4. Submit Your Online Application

Canada Startup Visa Processing Time

The estimated processing time is 40 months. If your application meets all eligibility requirements, including financial readiness, a clean police record, and a passed medical exam, IRCC will assess your file. If additional documents or an interview is required, you will be contacted. If your application is approved, you will receive confirmation of permanent residence and will be asked to submit your passport so the visa office can issue your permanent resident visa.

Your application may be delayed if:

• Additional criminal or security checks are required.
• Family situation is unclear (e.g., incomplete divorce, adoption, or custody issues).
• The visa office needs to verify your information with other visa offices.

To avoid delays:

• Inform the visa office of any changes to your personal information (e.g., address, phone, email, birth of a child). 
• Avoid contacting the visa office multiple times about the same issue.
• Give your biometrics within 30 days of receiving the instruction letter.

Your application won’t be accepted if :

• Your health is a danger to Canada’s public health or safety, 
• Your health would likely cause excessive demand on Canada’s health or social services
