The Trudeau government tabled the federal budget for 2022-23 on April 07, 2022. Among many other announcements for the recovery post-pandemic, the Canada budget 2022 proposes increased economic allocations and policy innovations for various Canadian immigration programs that the government is planning to pursue.

Canada Express Entry System: The federal government proposes to amend the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). It will provide more authority to the immigration minister to use Ministerial Instructions to help select candidates who best meet Canada’s labor market needs.

Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP): Canada budget 2022 proposes to invest $29.3 million over three years to create a Trusted Employer Model to cut red tape for the TFWP. This would mean increased hiring of foreign workers in the coming years. In addition, it wants to commit $64.6 million over three years to increase its capacity to process employer applications within established service standards.

Modernization of IRCC: Canada budget 2022 proposes to spend $187.3 million over five years and $37.2 million ongoing to improve IRCC’s response to the increasing number of inquiries. IRCC can also invest in the technology and tools to enable automated and machine-assisted processing. It will ensure the safe and secure collection and use of biometrics to accommodate higher levels of citizenship applications.

Additionally, the federal budget of 2022 commits $2.1 billion over five years to settle more than 400,000 new PRs each year. This will aid the current immigration levels plans 2022-2024.

Among various economic-class programs for skilled immigration, IRCC will let Canada Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) take the center stage. After four years of reducing immigration targets, Quebec has returned to the target of welcoming over 50,000 immigrants in 2022. It is encouraging to note that about 65 per cent will arrive through its economic-class immigration programs.
