A new labor market analysis for July 2022 from Statistics Canada was released recently. Job vacancies in Canada stayed high during the period.
Canada continues to have record-breaking job vacancies witnessing nearly 964,000 vacancies in July 2022. Compared with the past data, jobs in Canada increased by over 130,000 positions compared to last July 2021.
Most job vacancies in Canada in July 2022 were reported in service sector industries like accommodation and food services, and healthcare and social assistance.
Last month’s analysis noted as unemployment continues to decrease all over Canada, jobs rise across the country.
Read along with Canada’s plan for increasing immigration, Canadian businesses are now dependent heavily on skilled immigrants to fulfill increasing job vacancies across industries.

Huge Skills Gap in Canada’s Workforce
More than half (56.1%) of Canadian businesses in 2021 reported that their overall workforce was not fully proficient to perform their job at the required level.
For instance, 78.8% of employers reported skills gaps in the accommodation and food services sector. Even in the industry with the lowest reported skills gap (professional, scientific, and technical services) over a third (34.3%) of businesses reported a skills gap.
This will put more pressure on the Canadian government to increase foreign skilled immigration intakes to address the local business demands. Canada is looking to alleviate these labor and skills shortages by targeting record levels of immigration – welcoming 430,000 immigrants annually.
A new immigration levels plan for 2023-2025 is yet to be released soon in November 2022.
