Pathways to migrate to Australia

Following are the pathways for Australia migration:

General Skilled Migration (GSM)

Most of the immigrants come to Australia for work and the most popular Australia migration pathway for skilled workers is the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Three major visa types are available under the program, which are:

Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)

Foreign workers with the skills which are in demand in Australia are eligible to apply for Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189). The holders of this visa can live and work/study anywhere in Australia. But to qualify for this visa, the candidates must have work experience in an occupation which is featured in the skilled occupations list. Before applying for the visa, they must have undergone a skills assessment and received an invitation to apply for the visa, besides scoring enough points.

The benefits enjoyed by the holders of subclass 189 visa include the right to permanently stay, work and study anywhere in Australia. They can also enroll in Medicare, sponsor their relatives and travel to and from Australia for five years. Later, they may apply for Australian citizenship as well.  Almost 90% of applications for Subclass 189 visa are processed within 20 months and 75% of applications only take maximum 12 months to complete the processing.

Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)

The candidate must possess work experience in an eligible occupation and undergo a skills assessment in order to become eligible to obtain this permanent visa. They also need to obtain an invitation to apply for this visa and score enough points. The holders can live permanently and work or study anywhere in Australia, enroll in Medicare, sponsor their relatives and travel to and from Australia for five years. Later they may also apply for Australian citizenship. 90% of applications for this visa are processed within 10 months while 75% of applications have completed processing within 9 months.

Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)

Skilled workers who wish to live and work in regional Australia may apply for Subclass 489 visa and they may also apply for the Skilled Regional (Permanent) visa (subclass 887) later. The following are the three major pathways under Subclass 489 visa are:

  • Invited Pathway
  • Extended Stay Pathway
  • Subsequent Entry Pathway

Under the Extended stay pathway of subclass 489 visa allows the holders to stay in Australia for four years. But they are required to stay in the specified region.The Subsequent Entry pathway to allows the holders to live, work and study in a specified region of Australia. However, no standard processing times are available for subclass 489visa. Invited Pathway is currently closed for accepting applications.
