Major Policy Changes & Skilled Immigration to Australia Expected To Improve Following Election

Australia elected its 31st Prime Minister on May 23, 2022, following the Parliament majority secured by the Australian Labor Party. A new Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, and Multicultural Affairs is also appointed following the 2022 federal elections.

As a result, immigration experts expect policy changes based on the Labor Party’s liberal stance on skilled immigration to Australia and related issues.

In the run-up to the last election in 2019, the Labor Party declared that it aimed to overhaul key areas in Australia’s work visa program, however, it couldn’t be continued as the Coalition Party won the election.

Expected Changes in Skilled Immigration to Australia

The new Australian government may streamline the permanent and temporary migration programs, providing pathways to permanent residency and citizenship for visa holders working under successful arrangements and those that have priority skills that are in shortage in Australia.

Many foreign nationals under existing and future visa programs will likely benefit from a more streamlined process and pathway to Australian permanent residency.

The immigration department may also plan to reform the regional migration program to encourage skilled migrants to take up jobs in rural and regional locations only where skill gaps exist.

Moreover, the government is also keen on reducing the exploitation of temporary overseas workers. They could bring in adequate protection under Australian workplace law for them to get paid in accordance with Australian standards.
