Studying in Canada is becoming the latest trend. The official data shows the number of approved student visa holders resulted in a record rise in Canada’s international student population amid the pandemic.
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) data confirm quick recovery in study permit intake levels after strict travel restrictions were imposed in March 2020. By October 2020, the country eased some restrictions which allowed Canada’s international student population to rise. 

Canada welcomed 450,000 new international students in 2021 after the figure fell to just over 255,000 in 2020. The record spike in Canada student visa levels was due to two reasons: those who wanted to come to Canada in 2020 but could not due to the pandemic, as well as those who intended to begin their studies in Canada in 2021. New students arriving in Canada, as well as foreign nationals already living in Canada, were eligible to receive Canada student visa throughout 2021. 

Increasingly, aspirants from countries with large middle-class populations are choosing Canada as their preferred choice for overseas education for the following reasons: 

  • Affordable options than countries like the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom that also boosts large international student populations. 
  • Canada’s high-quality education, multiculturalism, and safety for immigrants.

Statistics Canada reveals three out of every 10 international students transition to Canada permanent residency within just 10 years of first receiving their Canada student visa.

Canada hosted nearly 622,000 international students as of December 31st, 2021. The pre-pandemic levels of Canada’s international student population were nearly 640,000 in 2019. Here is a list of Canada student visa holders by number:

How to Qualify for Canada Student Visa?

The academic year in Canada usually begins in September. Evidently, the period between July and August saw the newest Canada student visa holders taking effect: over 200,000 in total. 

The first step in studying in Canada is to conduct research on educational programs and DLIs. Designated Learning Institutions or DLIs are universities, colleges, and other post-secondary institutions approved by the government to host international students in Canada.

Once admission to any DLI of your choice is approved, you then obtain a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). This will allow to you submit a Canada student visa application to IRCC.
