Statistics Canada in its recent report noted the continued dependence of Canada on immigration to support its population growth. The report projected that Canada’s population could reach up to 57 million people by 2068 and is largely driven by increased immigration.
The report was part of projections for Canada’s population growth spanning the next 47 years.
The biggest reason for Canada to show an increased tendency to welcome more immigrants is because working-age Canadians are quickly reaching the retirement age of 65. By 2030, it is expected that nine million Canadians will have retired.
Therefore, Canada is resorting to sustaining its population through skilled immigration. At the present, Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan has a target of over 450,000 new permanent residents a year by 2024, the highest number in its history. The Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and British Colombia are likely to benefit from the increased number of immigrants over the next several years.

Canadian Labor Market for New Immigrants
Immigrants witnessed a rapid increase in their employment rate in recent times. In 2021, 77% of recent immigrants were employed and long-term immigrants (those who have been in Canada more than 10 years) had an employment rate of 84%.

Between 2010 and 2018, there was also an increase in initial earnings among new economic immigrants. The earnings in the first full year rose 39%. Family class immigrants saw a 27% increase in earnings leading to an average increase in wages of 35% for all new immigrants.
