It indicates an increase of 11 percent compared to 2019. Ontario has asked the federal government to double the number of economic immigrants the province can admit through its provincial nominee program. Other provinces are also expected to follow suit and make the efforts to have their immigration allocations increased in 2020.

Canada is increasingly giving importance to promote regional migration to the country. The Atlantic Immigration Pilot program was launched in 2017 as part of this goal. Through the program, almost 4000 more immigrants have come to Canada and settled in the four Atlantic provinces of the country. The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot launched in 2019 too is expected to become more active in 2020 with 11 designated communities having already started to admit newcomers through the program.

The Liberal Party has promised to introduce a new Municipal Nominee Program during their election campaigns. The program is expected to help municipalities to choose immigrants to settle down in their region based on their specific labour market needs. Though the government has not revealed much detail about the program, it is expected to become operational soon.
