Newcomers to Canada have established residential ties with Canada. Typically, they are people who have applied for or received permanent resident status from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). They can be also those who have received “approval-in-principle” from IRCC to stay in Canada.

Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey noted employment rose 55,000 in December, while unemployment was little changed. In the last two years, Canada noted the largest Employment gains in professional, scientific, and technical services (up 26,000 jobs, 31.3 per cent) as well as wholesale and retail trade (up 20,000 jobs, 28.7 per cent).

Unemployment in Canada was down slightly to 5.9 per cent as compared to 6 per cent in November. Before the pandemic, Canada recorded an unemployment rate of 5.6 per cent in February 2020.
