IRCC run a dedicated Federal Self-Employed Persons Program for eligible individuals to apply for permanent residency. Applications from interested individuals are received and evaluated on a points system which is based on work experience, age, education, language ability in English/French and other adaptability factors. A candidate requires a minimum of 35 points out of 100 points in order to be considered. 

Unlike business investors, there is no regulated minimum net worth requirement. However, such candidates are required to demonstrate their financial independence to settle in Canada. With a waiting time greatly reduced to 23 months, eligible foreign nationals working in the fields of arts and sports such as freelance journalists, painters, illustrators, filmmakers, music teachers, or athletes can apply for permanent residence in Canada.
