Upcoming Canadian Federal Elections Unlikely To Impact Immigration

Canada calls for federal elections on September 20, how will it affect immigration?

The current minority government formed by the Liberals and headed by Justin Trudeau has called for fresh federal elections on September 20.

PNP News

The government is not required to call for an election until 2023. However, polls suggest that support for the Liberals is high and it could be the right moment for the Liberals to win a majority that they had lost in the 2019 federal elections.

The seat share among the 338 seats of the Canadian Parliament from the 2019 election is as follows:

  • Liberals won 157 seats
  • Conservatives won 121 seats
  • Bloc Québécois won 32 seats
  • New Democratic Party (NDP) won 24 seats
  • Green Party won 3 seats
  • An Independent candidate won 1 seat

Current State of Canadian Immigration

With the improvement in the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Canada, the country has announced to allow full-vaccinated travellers to enter without any quarantine requirements. Travellers must have the recommended dosage of a vaccine approved for use in Canada. Currently, Canada accepts the following vaccine manufacturers: Astra Zeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). The mandatory use of the ArriveCAN application for submitting all travel-related documents remain in effect.

Regardless of any political party coming to power, Canada’s immigration policies will favour the entry of foreign students, skilled workers and their families. Canada’s population is ageing and it is dependent on immigration to sustain its developed economy and society.

If the Liberals will remain in power, their immigration policies will continue to be implemented by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and other federal departments. Canada will continue to pursue the Immigration Levels Plan 2021-2023, keep provincial nominee allocations high, hold Express Entry draws, and process study permits & other immigration applications. Even the Conservatives express strong support for immigration and oversaw higher immigration levels and the launch of Express Entry when they were last in power.
