Australian Government Will Expand Skilled Migration Cap To Fix Skills Shortage

The Australian government is looking at various possibilities to lift the annual cap on skilled migration so as to target more foreign skilled talents to enter the country.

The current annual migration to Australia targets 160,000 skilled workers, reports suggest the government could raise it to 180,000 or as high as 200,000 in the coming months.

Through the expansion of the skilled migration cap, the federal government is looking to fix the skills shortages across various industries in Australia induced by the significant drop in the number of permanent skilled workers following the border closure driven by the pandemic.

Skills Minister Brendan O’Connor remarked, “We have to find whatever means possible to supply skills to our labour market because increasing the skills in our labour market will increase productivity.”

“Investment in the Australian workforce is our number one priority, but we also have to, obviously, look at areas of acute demand and give opportunities for the temporary and permanent skilled migration paths.”

Skills shortages in Australia and possible solutions to fix them through increased migration targets will be the key topic of discussion at the government’s jobs and skills summit, set to take place next month in September.

About 100 people from unions, businesses, civil society and government are expected to take part in the forthcoming summit.

What is the PGP program?

Parents and Grandparents Program is a Canadian family immigration program. Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their parents and Grandparents to move to Canada. They are also endorsed to get permanent residence in Canada. Eventually, they can also apply for citizenship.

Eligibility and Requirements

To sponsor, you need to be eligible with certain requirements of the PGP program

Residing in Canada, you got to own permanent resident status or citizenship or at least registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act.
Be 18 or more than.
Sign an agreement to financially support and repay the social benefits of the sponsored members for the next 20 years. For Quebec, the undertaking period is for 10 years. You must meet the Quebec government’s immigration sponsorship requirements if you want to sponsor a parent or grandparent there. The income requirement in Quebec also differs from the rest of Canada.
For the PGP program, IRCC requires proof of income from the sponsor and should exceed the minimum necessary income level (MNI) for the three most recent tax years before the date of your application. This is to ensure that the sponsor can financially support their family members and as well the sponsored person. The MNI is based on the assessment of the Canada Revenue Agency.

The MNI requirements for the 2021 PGP are shown in the table below (excluding Quebec).

The Super Visa

Another choice for sponsors who want to sponsor their parents or grandparents is the Super Visa, which is offered all year long. The Super Visa lets you visit your children or grandchildren for five succeeding years at a time without needing to reapply for a tourist visa. It provides you with multiple entries for ten years.

The Super Visa requirements

To be eligible for the Super Visa, the applicant can be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. No other dependents are included as an applicant for the Super Visa.

Reports Find 4.6 Million Canadians Speak Language Other Than English Or French At Home

The recent report from Statistics Canada brings forth an unusual finding which reflects upon the language diversity in Canada. The report found that 4.6 million Canadians predominately speak a language other than English and French at home.

Immigration has been increasing the number of Canadians who speak a language other than English and French at home. In particular, 1 in 4 Canadians in 2021 reported their mother tongue other than English and French. They constitute about 9 million people in Canada.

However, the vast majority of Canadians still speak at least one of Canada’s two official languages – English or French. About 92.9% of the Canadian population in 2021 spoke English or French at home on a regular basis.

Statistics Canada also highlighted an interesting trend in the french-dominated province of Quebec. The number of people in Quebec whose first official language spoken is English topped 1 million for the first time.

Immigration continues to enrich Canada’s culture

Canadians who speak South Asian languages saw a significant increase between 2016 to 2021. In fact, the number of speakers of South Asian languages grew at least eight times larger than that of the entire Canadian population during the period.

First Ontario Entreprenuer Draw Since 2021

August 16 BC PNP draws targeted over 223 profiles having the minimum Skills and Immigration Registration System (SIRS) score in the range – 78 for Entry Level and Semi-Skilled workers and 132 for candidates in the Skilled Worker (EEBC) category.

Nearly 177 candidates were invited in a general draw that included tech occupations and Express Entry profiles.

BC PNP also held another rounds of invitations targeting the following occupations:

26 early childhood educators and assistants (NOC 4214) with scores of at least 60 points ,and
15 healthcare workers with scores of at least 60 points
5 healthcare assistants with scores of at least 60 points

August 10 BC PNP Tech draws nominated over 155 profiles to apply for provincial nominations and eventually qualify for Canada permanent residency.

August 10 BC PNP draws required the minimum Skills and Immigration Registration System (SIRS) score range from 76 for Entry Level and Semi-Skilled workers, to 114 for candidates in the Skilled Worker (EEBC) category.

The Provincial Nominee Program gives interested aspirants to live and work in British Columbia and a path to Canada permanent residency in a few years.

Interested candidates must register with SIRS and have their profiles assessed and evaluated based on age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and others.

New tech program

Generally, the Provincial Nominee Program requires eligible candidates to have work experience and a valid job offer. BC PNP Tech program requires immigration candidates to have work experience in one of 29 eligible occupations.

The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) held a new set of Canadian immigration draws on August 11. The latest Expression of Interest (EOI) Manitoba PNP draws led to 345 new Letters of Advice to Apply (LAA) for provincial nominations.

An Expression of Interest or simply EOI is another fancy word for your online profile. Manitoba PNP maintains a pool of eligible candidates who are willing to receive provincial nominations and qualify for Canada PR.

Results from the latest draw

The prairie province of Canada invited a mixed pool of on-shore as well as off-shore immigration candidates. Most in-demand occupations in Manitoba include Health, Business, Finance, Sales, and Administration jobs.

They qualified for various Manitoba PNP immigration streams while some were also registered under the Canada Express Entry pool to apply for provincial nominations.

Skilled Workers in Manitoba – 257 invitations with a minimum EOI score of 623;
Skilled Workers Overseas – 33 invitations with a minimum EOI score of 718; and
International Education Stream – 55 invitations with no EOI score requirement.
Additionally, about 86 invitations went to candidates registered in the federal Express Entry pool.

How to Qualify for Upcoming Manitoba PNP Draws?

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) held an all-program Express Entry draw on August 17. Canada issued a record 2,250 invitations to apply (ITA) with a qualifying Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) of 525 points.

August 17 draw is the fourth all-program Express Entry since July 06, as it resumes after a gap of nearly 18 months.

Canada invites registered Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residency who qualifies for Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canada Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skills Trades Program (FSTP), or with successful provincial nominations.

Advantage for International Students Under the Canada Express Entry

Thanks to the latest update from IRCC, Express Entry candidates will now be eligible for Canadian educational credential points for programs completed online between March 2020 and August 2022.

Normally, online education does not count for CRS points if more than 50% of the program was completed through distance learning.

The latest Express Entry reform relaxes evaluating rules for candidates who studied online during the pandemic.

The report reads the new measure applies to those who earned a Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate online during the eligibility period – March 2020 and August 2022.

These candidates may now be eligible for CRS points even if the program was entire: completed online, from outside Canada, or through part-time studies.

Additionally, thousands of expired PGWP holders can now extend their open work permit status by an additional 18 months. This will also help them transition to permanent residence and will allow them to continue working in Canada while they wait.

After registration of profiles online, the profiles are assessed and ranked based on the CRS score.

Establishing relationship with your partner: documents & evidence

To prove your relationship with a common-law partner for the purpose of immigration to Canada from UAE, you will need the following documents:

A completed IMM 5532 questionnaire titled “Relationship Information and Sponsorship Evaluation”
A completed IMM 5519 form if either member of the couple was previously in a common-law relationship with someone else
Evidence of separation from a former spouse if either person was previously married
Long-form birth certificates listing the names of both parents if the couple have children in common
Photos of the couple together

Additionaly, couples may be required to submit:

Documents showing the couple is recognized as being in a common-law relationship (such as employment or insurance benefits)
Evidence that the relationship is recognized by friends and/or family (letters, social media information showing the relationship is public)

Latest Saskatchewan EOI Draws Invites 433 Express Entry Profiles For Provincial Nominations

Saskatchewan released the nomination results of its weekly EOI draws held on August 11. The provincial draws invited 745 immigration candidates to apply for a provincial nomination for Canadian permanent residence (PR).

August 11 draw invited eligible profiles registered under Express Entry and Occupation-In-Demand candidates. EOI draw requires interested candidates to get their profile assessed on a score out of 100 according to the International Skilled Worker Points Assessment Grid.

The province favors candidates with bilingual capability in both English and French. The highest-scoring candidates are then issued an invitation to apply for a provincial nomination from Saskatchewan.

The latest EOI draw invited 745 candidates to apply for provincial nominations. Of these, 433 were issued to Express Entry candidates, and 312 invitations went to candidates in the Occupations in Demand category.

Both the categories required qualifying scores of 68 points.

Qualifying for Upcoming Saskatchewan PNP Draws

Saskatchewan is showing a departure from its usual pattern by holding PNP draws on a weekly basis throughout July. Otherwise, the province used to hold draws once per month.

In order to be considered for nominations under the upcoming Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program (SINP) draws, candidates must register their Expression of Interest (EOI) profile with the provincial authority.

Candidates must demonstrate their commitment to meaningfully settling in Saskatchewan by demonstrating their work experience, education, language ability, age, and connections to the province.

All the invited candidates must have valid Educational Credential Assessments.

Additionally, candidates already in the federal Express Entry pool need to register another EOI and choose Saskatchewan.

Route to Permanent Residency

On successfully receiving an invitation to apply (ITA) for a provincial nomination, candidates are awarded an additional 600 points toward their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. It will effectively guarantee an ITA for Canada PR in the subsequent Express Entry draw conducted by IRCC.

Canada has received 175,000 applications in the first quarter of 2022 alone.

The Canadian Employee Relocation Council (CERC) conducted a survey focusing on the workforce mobility in Canada. Among other prominent questions addressed in the survey, the respondents unanimously agreed with the statement, “The contributions of international talent are important to our business.”

Canadian employers value the importance of international talent to their businesses.

Of those employers participating in the survey, 97% hire international talent through work permit programs and 53% access economic immigration like Provincial Nominee Programs & Express Entry.

However, the survey pointed out delays in work permits and its negative impacts. Canadian companies, academic institutions, and government-funded organizations that are dependent on immigration of foreign talents are facing supply shortage.

IRCC reported an increase in application backlogs from 2.4 million to 2.7 million between June and July. The increasing backlog is significant in delaying processing times of immigration applications, especially work permits.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser is hoping for the processing times to settle down and return to normal by the end of the calendar year.

The CERC survey also noted the importance and need for increasing immigration in rebuilding the Canadian economy in a post pandemic world.
