Canada Welcomed 158,600 New Immigrants Since March 2020

Canada Immigration

The latest data released by the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) showed the second strongest growth for new immigrant arrivals to Canada since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Canada welcomed about 15,100 new immigrants in the month of October 2020. It is about the same level it welcomed the previous month, September 2020. The strongest month during the pandemic came in June when Canada admitted 19,100 new permanent residents.

While aspiring Canada PR candidates & other immigrants rejoice with the latest data, Canada used to welcome some 25,000-35,000 new immigrants per month. In October 2019, Canada welcomed 31,000 immigrants, meaning that immigration has more than halved on a year-over-year basis.

Last year alone, Canada managed to welcome over 341,000 new immigrants to support its economy as well as society. The disruptions caused by the pandemic, challenges in confirmation of permanent residence (COPR) holders coming to Canada, and Canada’s coronavirus travel restrictions resulted in about welcoming 158,600 immigrants in the first 10 months of 2020.

But there is light at the end of every tunnel and so are Canada’s recent efforts to bring its immigration levels back to its track paying off.

Earlier this month, the federal minister for immigration Merco Mendicino appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Immigration and responded positively to a question on the future of immigration. He said that the government will continue to apply policy flexibilities to minimize the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

We believe that the following trends signal the revival of the Canadian immigration system:

  • The revised Immigration Levels Plans for 2021-2023 target 400,000 new immigrants to be welcomed each year until 2023. Out of which over 60% would be nominated for permanent residency under economic immigration programs like Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skills Trades Program, Provincial Nominee Programs, Entrepreneur programs.

  • Provincial Nominee Programs are innovating by launching new pilots that attract various classes of economic immigrants. New Entrepreneur Immigration program like British Columbia Regional Pilot is an attractive option to settle and start a business in British Columbia. Canada PR can be obtained with five years.

  • Canada is favoring bilingual candidates to apply for permanent residence. It is in line with its target to increase the french-speaking population by 4.4% outside the Quebec region.

  • Family immigration programs are targeting 10,000 sponsors in 2020 for the Parents & Grandparents Program and the same is expected to jump up to 30,000 sponsors.

Also, public confidence in welcoming more immigrants to Canada is at an all-time high. It gives additional incentive for policymakers to focus on simplifying immigration laws to attract more foreign skilled workers, entrepreneurs, international graduates.
