Survey Reports from Waterloo Region Of Ontario Suggest Big Opportunities For Tech Immigration

A biennial immigration survey was recently conducted to outline experiences and challenges faced by new arrivals in the Waterloo region of Ontario. The Waterloo Region of Ontario is a tech hub and attracts a lot of global talent to study, work and eventually, qualify for Canadian permanent residency

PNP News
Many choose Waterloo Region because of the reputation of local post-secondary institutions and job offers.

The Waterloo Region has the highest concentration of the Information Technology and Analytical Instruments sector in Canada, based on population. It is majorly a hub for startups and tech talent with over 1600 tech-related businesses.

The Waterloo Region Immigration Survey Report 2021 covered nearly 1,500 participants belonging to various immigrant groups like international students, temporary workers, and their families. Over 33% of respondents belonged to Asian countries.

Canada PR Options for Tech Talents

Immigration in Canada means obtaining permanent residency.

Express Entry Year-End Report noted tech occupations dominated among candidates who were invited to apply for Canada permanent residence.

Federal immigration programs

  1. Express Entry System

Aspirants choose Canada because of its direct permanent residence pathway.

Any prospective candidate who seeks to obtain Canada permanent residency must register their profiles online on the Express Entry portal. All the registered profiles are then assessed and ranked based on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

Such profiles are evaluated on a total of 1200 points. The human capital criteria like

  • age,
  • education,
  • work experience outside Canada,
  • language proficiency in English/French,
  • spouse adaptability,
  • Canadian study experience, etc. are considered for evaluation purposes.

Tech workers qualify for any of the two federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Canada Express Entry.

FSWP was the main source of foreign skilled immigrants to Canada without a job offer.

CEC profiles mostly benefit international student graduates who had gained at least one year of work experience and were eligible to apply for permanent residency.

Provincial nominee programs

After receiving provincial nominations from any of the below provincial streams, you can apply to the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to qualify for permanent residency

Provincial nominees with active Express Entry profiles are awarded 600 points over and above their usual Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. This may guarantee an invitation to apply for Canadian permanent residency in upcoming PNP-specific Express Entry draws.

  1. Ontario Tech Draws

Ontario conducts Tech Draws for tech workers who are eligible for the Human Capital Priorities (HCP) stream.

Interested candidates are required to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Eligible for either the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Canadian Experience Class.

Qualifying for Upcoming Saskatchewan PNP Draws

In order to be considered for nominations under the upcoming Saskatchewan Immigration Nominee Program (SINP) draws, candidates must register their Expression of Interest (EOI) profile with the provincial authority.

Candidates must demonstrate their commitment to meaningfully settling in Saskatchewan by demonstrating their work experience, education, language ability, age, and connections to the province.

Saskatchewan gives candidates a score out of 100 according to the International Skilled Worker Points Assessment Grid. The province favors candidates with bilingual capability in both English and French. The highest-scoring candidates are then issued an invitation to apply for a provincial nomination from Saskatchewan.

All the invited candidates must have valid Educational Credential Assessments.

Additionally, candidates already in the federal Express Entry pool need to register another EOI and choose Saskatchewan.

Canada Re-Introduces Random COVID-19 Testing On Air Travellers

Canada resumes random testing for fully vaccinated air travellers as of July 19. The mandatory random testing for air travellers was earlier paused on June 11.

As we have said all along, Canada’s border measures will remain flexible and adaptable, guided by science and prudence. We need to keep border testing measures in place because that is how we track importation of the COVID-19 virus, and of new variants of concern. We will keep adapting our border measures to balance the need to protect Canadians while supporting our economic recovery,” assured honorable Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos.

Canada-immigration-news
Testing will resume at the four major Canadian airports in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, and Toronto. Those selected for a random test will receive an email notification within 15 minutes of completing their customs declaration, explaining how they can arrange for a test.

A fully vaccinated traveller must have received two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine, or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, at least 14 days before entering Canada.

Travellers who do not qualify as fully vaccinated must continue to complete a 14-day quarantine and test themselves on day one and eight.

Selected partially vaccinated can complete their tests by virtual appointment or an in-person appointment at select pharmacies and still respect their quarantine requirements. If the arrival test results are positive, travellers are advised to go into isolation for 10 days, irrespective of the province or territory isolation requirement.

Regardless of vaccination status, the tests will be done outside of the airport, either at an in-person appointment at a testing provider location, or a virtual appointment for a self-swab test.

All travellers must continue to use ArriveCAN to provide mandatory travel information within 72 hours before their arrival in Canada, with few exceptions.

Ontario offers two pathways for regional immigration – the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) and the Rural and Northern Immigration Program (RNIP).

The OINP allows skilled workers, international students, and other foreign individuals to apply for a provincial nomination for permanent residence in Ontario. It also has a Regional Immigration Pilot that focuses on increasing immigration to rural communities in Ontario. The pilot works under the OINP’s Employer Job Offer streams.

In order to qualify for one of these streams, any interested candidate must have a full-time job offer from an employer in one of the eligible communities.

Another great option for regional immigration to Canada is through the RNIP.

Northern Immigration Program is a federal immigration program that works with small and remote communities across Canada. There are currently 11 communities participating in the RNIP, five of which are in Ontario:

All the invited candidates now have 45 calendar days to submit their application to receive a provincial nomination and eventually qualify for Canadian permanent residency.

Ontario Skilled Trades Stream Opens PR Pathways for CEC Candidates

Ontario Skilled Trades Stream linked to the Express Entry pool offers an alternate pathway to Canadian permanent residency via Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates.

Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP) issues provincial nominations to eligible skilled workers under its famous Human Capital Priorities stream. The province also invites candidates already registered in the federal pool under its Tech draw.

Those with provincial nominations like the one from Express Entry Human Capital Priorities (HCP) stream or Express Entry Skilled Trades stream or Ontario Tech Draw or any other stream will get preferential treatment to obtain Canadian permanent residency.

The inclusion of additional 600 CRS points makes the entire process of applying for Canada PR through Canada Express Entry even simpler.

Global Liveability Index 2022: Three Canadian Cities Ranked Among Top 10 Most Liveable Cities

Canadian cities namely Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto continue to retain top spots on Global Liveability Index 2022

The index is a yearly assessment by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) on the urban quality of life, determined by five factors – stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Canada-immigration-news

The Economist Intelligence Unit is a division of The Economist Group, which operates the popular magazine The Economist.

The survey ranked Calgary in Alberta province at third position out of 172 world cities, the highest by any city in Canada. It tied up with Zurich in Switzerland.

Vancouver in British Columbia province moved up a place to fifth, compared to last year’s rank. While Toronto in Ontario province slipped one place to secure the eighth position.

Together, they make three Canadian cities among the top 10 most ‘liveable’ cities.

The high ranking of Canadian cities- Calgary in Alberta province, Vancouver in British Columbia province, and Toronto in Ontario province also indicate that these urban cities are free from the threat of terror, military conflict or civil unrest.

The availability and quality of private and public healthcare as well as education are beyond expectations in these cities. Also, the quality of roads, public transportation, availability of housing, secularity and tolerance are all at its peak.

Find out if you are eligible for any Canada immigration program using our free immigration assessment system.

Canadian Cities Popular Among Immigrants

According to Statistics Canada, Calgary had welcomed nearly 46% of total immigrants moving to Alberta. During the same period, nearly 81% of total immigrants moving to British Columbia landed up in Vancouver and about 76% of immigrants who moved to Ontario chose Toronto as their preferred destination.

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and is a competitor to Silicon Valley and Seattle in terms of tech jobs and settlements. Since 2013, it has added about 80,100 tech jobs and skilled foreign immigrants were its major beneficiaries.

Calgary, Alberta is known for heavy establishments such as the oil and gas industry and the same requires a skilled workforce which is fulfilled by foreign skilled Immigration

Last year’s index applauded the efforts of Vancouver in maintaining corruption-free public services, a high-level of secularism, and greater sensitivity to climate change. Toronto outranked other Canadian cities in healthcare and education services.

Additionally, a recent study by the Canadian Bureau for International Education ranked Canada’s stability as the number one deciding factor for international students.

Qualifying for Canadian Permanent Residency

A unique agreement between the federal government and provincial governments of Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia offers immigration opportunities – Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP), and the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) respectively.

A successful nomination under any one of the three provincial programs can boost your chances of qualifying for Canadian permanent residence.

Currently, the AINP has three immigration streams: Alberta Opportunity Stream, Alberta Self-Employed Farmer Stream, and Alberta Express Entry Stream. Each of these streams caters to a specific group of immigrants.

In recent times, Alberta’s Express Entry Stream has given provincial nominations to eligible candidates even with CRS cut-off scores as low as 300.

The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) accepts applications under three immigration categories namely Human Capital Category, Employer Job Offer Category, and Business Category. Express Entry candidates with work experience in specific tech occupations are targeted under the Human Capital Category.

British Columbia has two main immigration streams under the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP): Entrepreneur Immigration, Skills Immigration, and Express Entry candidates.
